Great south Afri Port Edward was laid out on Banner’s Rest and bought by Mr. Pringle for his retirement. It was renamed Port Edward in honour of the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VIII. Port Edward has a delightful beach that overlooks a hill known by Europeans as ‘Tragedy Hill’. The coast here at Port Edward is known for its shipwrecks and in 1878, ‘The Ivy’ ran aground on the beach. When the locals realised its cargo included hundreds of cases of wine, beer and spirits, they went on the biggest binge of their lives!
