Description

Mazeppa derives its name from the ship, the Mazeppa. The ship was captained by a CJ Cato, on its way to Delagoa Bay from Port Natal in 1842. The Mazeppa was in search of a British man-of war to rescue the Garrison, which had been besieged by the Boers. The captain steered the ship into what is now known as Mazeppa Bay for shelter and ran aground. Legend has it that its ruins are buried under the sand dunes at Mazeppa Bay

Mazeppa Bay Hotel was taken over by its current owners in 1995, the hotel itself was in quite a state of disrepair and much love and hard work was put into the hotel to make it what it is today. Mazeppa Bay Hotel has 3 stars, and is AA Highly Recommended, with a choice of family or double rooms, as well as two honeymoon suits.

Named after a small schooner captained by a certain captain Allen, the Bay and Point at Mazeppa is the setting for the Mazeppa Bay Hotel.

Vernon and Sandy acton took over the hotel several years ago when it was in a very run down state, and have created a wonderful atmosphere of hospitality, where guests can enjoy home-from-home comforts and wholesome home-cooked meals.

Fishing is a favorite activity here, and you do not have to bring rods, reels and smelly bait along with you. Tackle is available for hire and bait is on sale in the bar. There are more than ten different fishing spots all within walking distance from the hotel to try out - so there are many opportunities to land that big one!

Hiking and walking are popular pastimes. Kob Inn is a 6km hike from the hotel and Cebe Nature Reserve is a 17km hike. For those who enjoy nature at its best, a walk in the coastal forest is a must. There are numerous trails to choose from - all fringed with ancient trees and a wonderful variety of flowering shrubs, plants and tropical flowers. The peace can be quite eerie at times especially for the city folk not used to the silence!

The more energetic visitors can try sand boarding on the giant dunes, or enjoy games of volley ball, tennis and table tennis. The hotel also boasts a full-sized snooker table, dart board and DSTV in the main lounge. Vernon always tries to let the guests win at least one game of pool!

After an eventful day in the fresh air, bar snacks at 6:00 pm willl quell those hunger pangs while you enjoy a sundowner in "The Red Blanket" cocktail bar.

Mazeppa Bay is the only hotel on the Wild Coast with its own island, which at high tide is only accessible via a quaint suspension bridge. The crossing is scary at first, but well worth the effort.

Being so peacefully remote is what makes Mazeppa Bay Hotel the place to be!
